Project: HADOKEN

Monday, December 15th, 2008

So, I’ve recently acquired what I would largely consider my “dream” car: a 1992 Honda Civic SI. Okay, so it’s probably not a very extravagant dream car, but it’s something that I’ve always wanted to work on, and after 8 years I finally got my hands on one for a decent price. It needs some work, to be certain, but I’m really looking forward to this as a project car.

So, after 1991 the body style of the Civic changed drastically, switching a more streamlined and aerodynamic chassis. The 1992 Civic SI features a D16Z6 SOHC V-TEC engine putting out about 125 horsepower, front and rear disc brakes, 5-speed manual transmission, and Honda’s double wishbone suspension. Now, the SOHC D series engine doesn’t really get that much love with Honda fans, and is generally overshadowed by the more powerful DOHC B series engines. But, it is an interesting engine that can be quite versatile if tuned correctly. The D series has sort of a cult following, and I plan on sticking with the D16Z6 block and building a fun car to drive around this power plant.

After a few days of full on cleaning and detailing, I present the blue fireball, HADOKEN!

So, there’s a lot that I want to do with the car. First thing to go are those hideous wheels, which are being replaced by a set of OEM Civic HX wheels from Honda. Also, the stock suspension is really old and shot, so I’ve got a full set of Buddy Club coilovers sitting in my closet that are going in next, as well as an Energy Suspension polyurethane bushing kit to replace all the worn bushings. After that, I’m rebuilding the entire engine and transmission, which should put me at about 150 horsepower. That coupled with the suspension set up should make it a really fun car to drive.  My main goal is to keep the car durable, clean looking, and avoid the stereotypical “ricer” look. Go Honda!

This will be a long work in progress, but I’m really anxious to finish this project, and will keep updating as things are completed. The car reminds me of my first car, a 1994 Civic DX. It was a little red coupe, which my friends from Ohio will remember. This really brings up some old nostalgia, which is another reason I really enjoy this car. Good memories.

So, I went to check my website statistics today off of some whim, and to my great and humble surprise, I discovered I had 102 hits today, 74 of which were unique visitors. My immediate reaction was “WTF?”, as I only knew of a [small] handful of people who actually read this drivel. But 102? Earlier this week, I think it was Sunday, I had 202 hits. What is going on?

This is quite alarming, you see, because now I feel like I must post useful content regularly to interest and engage those who take the time to visit my little blog. I feel tricked into posting content. Dammit!

More updates to grudgingly ensue.

Sadly, the mighty beard pales in comparison to the power of the Navy. Thus, the beard has been removed.

Heh, on the way to Vegas I happened to spy this very comical Honda Fit cruising down the I-15.
